Jazz Legend Billy Taylor died at age 89

ขอไว้อาลัยศิลปินแจ้สรุ่นเก๋าในดวงใจคนหนึ่ง Billy Taylor ซึ่งเสียชีวิตด้วยอาการหัวใจวายเมื่อวันที่ 28 ธันวาคม 2553 ด้วยอายุ 89 ปี

ลุง Taylor เคยเล่นกับศิลปินดังๆ อย่าง Duke Ellington, Charlie Parker, Wynton Marsalis, หรือ Miles Davis  ล่าสุดเขามีตำแหน่งผู้กำกับศิลป์ของศูนย์สังคีต John F. Kennedy ในวอชิงตันดีซี กว่า 16 ปี

เพลง I wish I knew how it would feel to be free ที่ Taylor แต่งในปี 1954 และ Nina Simone นำมาร้องในอัลบั้ม Silk and Soul ของเธอ เป็นเพลงที่โด่งดัง และมีบทบาทสำคัญในการต่อต้านเรื่องการเหยียดผิวในอเมริกาในช่วงปี 1950s- 1960s

Jazz legend Billy Taylor passed away after suffering a heart attack this past Tuesday, December 28, 2010, at the age of 89.

Taylor most recently served as the Artistic Director for jazz at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.  He filled that role for 16 years; he also had a longstanding career with NPR where he hosted several radio broadcasts including Jazz Alive! and Billy Taylor’s Jazz at the Kennedy Center.

Taylor had a career that spanned nearly 70 years. He collaborated with almost every significant performer in jazz, from Duke Ellington and Charlie Parker to Wynton Marsalis, but he had an even rarer gift for explaining his music and drawing people to it.

Among his most notable works is "I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel to Be Free", composed in 1954, and subsequently achieving more popularity with Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and 1960s. Nina Simone covered the song in her 1967 album "Silk and Soul".  Lighthouse Family also sang this song in 2001 in their album "Whatever Gets You Through The Day".
