I was also enamored by Tom Ford’s commentary which makes the movie even more interesting.  I enjoyed it so much that I had to transcribe it and share bits and pieces here.  I also insert quotes from the movie when applicable to the context.  The whole movie is absolutely poetic. 

หลังจากที่ได้กล่าวถึงความประทับใจในเนื้อหาของหนังแล้ว ในตอนที่สองนี้เรามาดูเรื่องบทภาพยนต์ ความพิถีพิถันในการทำหนัง และการลำดับภาพอย่างเหนือชั้นของหนังเรื่องนี้ก้น ที่เอามาเขียนนี้เรียบเรียงจากบทบรรยายที่Tom Ford เล่าได้อย่างน่าสนใจมาก ใครที่เอาดีวีดีมาดูอย่าพลาด (ปกติไม่ชอบเอาคลิปหนังมาแปะ อยากให้คนไปซื้อหนังมาดู แต่สงสัยหนังเรื่องนี้จะหายาก ในบางตอนเลยเอาคลิปที่เจอเป็นภาษาเยอรมันมาแปะ มีซับไตเติ้ลเป็นภาษาอังกฤษ ไม่รู้ในเมืองไทยจะดูได้หรือเปล่า หนังพากษ์เสียอรรถรสไม่น้อย แต่ก็ดีกว่าไม่ได้ดูเนอะ)

ขอเริ่มจากภาพในหนัง ภาพทุกภาพหากดึงออกมาเป็นภาพนิ่ง เกือบจะเรียกได้ว่าสวยด้วยตัวเองได้ทุกภาพ จะเรียกว่าเป็นเหมือนบทกวีบทแผ่นฟิล์มก็คงไม่เกินจริงนัก ทุกอย่างเกี่ยวกับหนังมีความประณีตบรรจง เหมาะกับยุคสมัยเหมาะกับตัวละครในเรื่อง และเนื่องจากหนังเรื่องนี้เป็นเหมือนกับอัตชีวประวัติของฟอร์ดเองด้วยเท่าๆกับประวัติของ Christopher Isherwood เจ้าของนวนิยาย ทุกอย่างจึงสะท้อนให้เห็นเอกลักษณ์และรสนิยมของฟอร์ดด้วยอย่างงดงามเหมาะเจาะ

ในสมัยนี้ หนังมากมายเริ่มถ่ายกันด้วยกล้องดิจิตัลแล้ว แต่เรื่องนี้ถ่ายด้วยฟิล์มโกดักเก่าที่ทั้งFord และผู้กำกับกล้อง Eduard Grau กว้านซื้อจนกุรุษสุดท้ายมาจากทั่วโลก หนังก็เลยมีเกรนนิดๆ คลาสสิคมากๆ อ่านบล้อคของคนนึงในอินเตอร์เนต เค้าบอกว่าพอดูหนังจบรีบไปซื้อก้อปปี้ที่เป็น Blu-ray มาเลย แต่ปรากฏว่าคุณภาพไม่ได้ต่างไป ชอบที่เค้าบอกว่า “Ford’s use of heavy grain from the film stock works perfectly to help convey the old school 1962 time period… This movie is all about the 35 mm film to cinema, like vinyl records are to music.  The perfections and imperfections are what make it great.”(http://blackboxblue.wordpress.com) (์ตรงนี้เป็นกับตัวเอง หลายครั้งที่เห็นภาพที่สมบูรณ์แบบแต่ขาดวิญญาณ รู้สึกไม่น่าสนใจ คงเหมือนคน มีทั้งข้อดีข้อเสียในตัวเองทำให้น่าติดตามดี- it’s what makes us human.) ในเรื่องนี้ Ford จะเล่นกับสีอย่างที่ตัวเองถูกใจมากๆเลยทีเดียว เนื่องจากหนังทั้งเรื่องเป็นเหมือนกับเรานั่งอยู่ในความคิด ของจอร์จ ตัวเอกในเรื่อง เราจะได้เห็นความเป็นไปต่างๆผ่านโลกทัศน์ของเค้า เวลาที่จอร์จจมจ่อมอยู่ในความเศร้าโศกซึมเซา สีจะเป็นสีตุ่นๆ ส่วนเวลาที่มีความหวัง ตื่นเต้น Ford จะระบายสีให้จ้าจนกลายเป็นเทคนิคคัลเลอร์เลย

ฉากแรกของหนังเปิดด้วยภาพนี้ในไตเติ้ล เป็นGeorge ในความฝันที่รู้สึกว่าตัวเองดำดิ่งจมน้ำ โทนสีเย็นยะเยือก

 

ต่อจากนั้นจอร์จก็ฝันว่าตัวเองมองดูร่างที่ไร้วิญญาณของจิมใต้ซากรถ กลางหิมะที่หนาวเหน็บ จอร์จเดินเข้าไปในลานหิมะพร้อมล้มตัวลงนอนข้างๆจิมพร้อมกับประทับรอยจูบลงไปบนริมฝีปากที่เย็นชืด แต่แล้วก็ต้องสะดุ้งตื่น



ภาพนี้เป็นภาพที่ตัวเองชอบเป็นพิเศษ รู้สึกว่าเหมือนภาพเขียนมากๆ สไตล์แบบ Salvador Dali เหนือจริง หลอนๆ – Tom Ford ก็บอกว่าเค้าเอาความคิดมาจากภาพเขียนแต่ไม่ยอมบอกว่าภาพไหน แล้วพูดติดตลกว่า Coco Chanel เคยพูดว่า “Creativity is the art of concealing your source” –การสร้างสรรค์คือศิลปะในการปกปิดว่าเราไปลอกใครเค้ามา ฮ่าๆๆๆภาพที่คิดถึงจะเป็นภาพนี้ (ภาพเก่งที่ติดหัวสมองเสมอ) – The Persistence of Memory (Salvador Dali – 1931) ชื่อภาพก็เข้ากับบรรยากาศ “ความทรงจำที่ไม่รู้ลืม” ใครนึกภาพอื่นออกบอกที

 

จอร์จต้องสะดุ้งตื่น พร้อมกับสำนึกว่าตัวเองได้กลับเข้ามาในโลกแห่งความเป็นจริงที่เย็นยะเยือกจับขั้วหัวใจ กล้องถ่ายจากมุมสูงให้เห็นว่า ข้างๆ ตัวจอร์จ มีสมุดโน้ตกับปากกาที่หมึกซึมออกมาเปื้อนที่นอนเป็นวงดำใหญ่ตรงที่ที่จิมเคยนอน จอร์จยกมือที่เปื้อนหมึกดำขึ้นมาแตะริมฝีปาก ตรงนี้เป็นนัยถึงจุมพิตมรณะ (The Kiss of Death)





เรื่องจึงเริ่มด้วยบท Monologue ของจอร์จที่ตัวเองชอบมากๆ ขอคัดมาให้อ่าน

“Waking up begins with saying “am” and “now”.  For the past eight months, waking up has actually hurt.  Cold realization that I'm still here slowly sets in.  I was never terribly fond of waking up.  I was never one to jump out of bed and greet the day with a smile like Jim was.  I used to want to punch him sometimes in the morning.  He was so happy.  I always used to tell him that only fools greet the day with a smile, that only fools could possibly escape the simple truth that now isn't simply now.  It's a cold reminder.  One day later than yesterday.  One year later than last year... and that sooner or later... it will come.  He used to laugh at me and then give me a kiss on the cheek…”

ที่ชอบเพราะเป็นข้อคิดสะท้อนแนวคิดทางพุทธศาสนาที่สอนให้รู้เท่าทัน สอนให้มีสติและอยู่กับปัจจุบัน พระพุทธเจ้าทรงสอนให้ทุกคนตั้งอยู่ในความไม่ประมาท เพราะความตายเป็นของแน่นอน จึงไม่จำเป็นต้องกลัว ตรงนี้จอร์จมีความกลัว “it” ในที่นี้คือความตาย แล้วก็มักจะหมั่นไส้จิมว่าจะดีใจปลาบปลื้มกับวันใหม่ไปทำไม ในเมื่อวันนี้เป็นวันที่เราเหมือนกับเป็นไม้ที่ลอยเข้าไปใกล้ฝั่งเรื่อยๆ ส่วนจิมไม่เคยสนใจตรงนั้น เค้าจะตื่นเต้นมีความสุขกับวันใหม่และมีความสุขกับปัจจุบันเสมอ

(ตัวเองก็เคยเป็นนะ บางวันที่อารมณ์บูด เวลาเห็นคนอื่นอารมณ์ดีเกินขนาดก็จะหมั่นไส้เค้าเอาดื้อๆ ในทางกลับกัน เวลาเราอารมณ์ดีคนอาจจะรู้สึกอย่างนั้นก็ได้ พูดถึงเรื่องนี้ ทำให้นึกถึงเพื่อนร่วมงานคนนึงนานมาแล้ว เวลาเค้าเดินเข้าที่ทำงานมาทีไร หน้าตาเหมือนคนกำลังจะจมน้ำเสมอ ไม่ค่อยมีคนคุยกับเค้าเพราะเค้าเป็นคนเก็บตัว เราเห็นทีไรสงสารต้องเข้าไปคุย เวลาเห็นแววตาที่เป็นประกายขึ้นมาของเค้าแล้วรู้สึกดีใจ มาคิดไปตอนนี้ เค้าคงกำลังฝ่า mid-life crisis ของตัวเองอยู่เป็นแน่ และ ณ ขณะนั้นของชีวิต เมื่อได้รู้ว่ามีใครสักคนที่แคร์คงจะเป็นการจุดประกายความหวังให้วาบขึ้นมาในใจ)

“It takes time in the morning for me to become George – time to adjust to what is expected of George and how he is to behave.  By the time I've dressed and put the final layer of polish on the now slightly stiff but quite perfect George, I know fully what part I'm supposed to play.

Looking in the mirror, starring back at me isn't so much a face as the expression of a predicament."

“You must get through the goddamn day!”
ในบางวัน ขอแค่ให้ผ่านวันนี้ไปได้ก็พอ - ใช่เลย



…A bit melodramatic I guess.  Then again, my heart has been broken.  I feel as if I'm sinking, drowning, can't breathe... For the first time in my life, I can't see my future.  Everyday goes by in a haze.  But today, I have decided, will be different.”

ใครที่เคยอกหักอย่างแรง เข้าใจตรงนี้ดีเลิศ

ฉากต่อไปเผยให้เห็นบ้านของจอร์จที่ Ford เห็นว่ามีความสำคัญเท่ากับตัวละครในเรื่องทีเดียว เหตุผลที่จอร์จย้ายมาอยู่ที่อเมริกาก็เพราะชอบความทันสมัย กับความคิดแบบหัวก้าวหน้าตามแบบโลกใหม่ แต่ในขณะเดียวกันเค้าก็โตขึ้นมากับบ้านที่มีความอบอุ่น ฝาเป็นไม้ ดังนั้นก็ต้องหาบ้านที่มีสถาปัตยกรรมแบบสมัยใหม่แต่คงความอบอุ่นไว้ด้วย แล้วก็ต้องอยู่ในแถบลอสแองเจลิส เพราะเป็นสถานที่ตามท้องเรื่อง

บ้านที่เลือกมา ตัวเองก็ชอบมากอีกเช่นกัน เป็นบ้านที่ออกแบบโดย John Lautner สถาปนิกที่ภายหลังมาโด่งดังด้วยการออกแบบบ้านที่ทำด้วยคอนกรีต บ้านหลังนี้ออกแบบในปี 1948 เป็นหลังแรกที่ Lautner ออกแบบเองหลังจากแยกตัวมาจาก Frank Lloyd Wright ดังนั้นจึงมีกลิ่นอายของ Wright อยู่ไม่น้อย การที่บ้านเป็นบ้านกระจกที่อยู่ใจกลางเมืองหลวงก็เป็นสิ่งสำคัญ เพราะเปรียบเสมือนว่าจอร์จ สามารถเห็นความเป็นไปของสรรพสิ่งรอบตัวเค้าได้ แต่ยังล้อมกรอบตัวเองให้ห่างออกมาด้วยกระจก

อีกอย่างนึงคำว่า Glass house ก็เป็นการเล่นคำเหมือนกัน เพราะคนที่อยู่ในบ้านกระจกในภาษาอังกฤษ หมายถึงคนที่เหมือนมีชนักติดหลัง ทำอะไรต้องระวัง (ตัวอย่างในสำนวนที่ว่า “People Who Live In Glass Houses Should Not Throw Stones” ซึ่งคงจะเทียบได้กับสำนวนไทยที่ว่า “ขว้างงูไม่พ้นคอ” – อย่าไปวิพากษ์วิจารณ์คนอื่นเมื่อตัวเองก็ไม่ได้ดีพร้อม) การเป็นเกย์ในสมัยนั้นเป็นเรื่องที่คนปกปิดกัน ในเรื่องจะมีการเอ่ยถึง Glass house หลายตอน

 

วันนี้เป็นวันที่จอร์จตัดสินใจจะจบชีวิตตัวเอง สีของทุกอย่างจะถูกทำให้เป็นสีหม่นๆ
และด้วยการตัดสินใจนี้จอร์จจึงมองทุกอย่างด้วยมุมมองใหม่ เพราะนี่เป็นการมองเป็นครั้งสุดท้าย เพราะอย่างนี้จึงมีการเน้นภาพ “ตา” อย่างมากมายในหนัง






ตอนต่อไปมีบทพูดที่เกี่ยวกับสถานการณ์ในช่วงปี 1962 ในอเมริกา ช่วง Missiles Crisis ที่ฟิเดล คาสโตรขู่จะยิงขีปนาวุทธใส่สหรัฐ คนพากันกลัวไปทุกหย่อมหญ้า พากันสร้างหลุมหลบภัย เตรียมรับมือ (จำได้ว่ามีหนังอีกเรื่องที่พูดถึงตรงนี้ A Blast from the Past นานนน แล้ว) จะว่าไปก็เข้ากับสมัยนี้มากๆ สมัยก่อนคนกลัว Communists สมัยนี้คนกลัว Terrorists

ชอบบทพูดตอนนี้ที่จอร์จพูดกับเพื่อนอาจารย์ถึงความตื้นเขินของนักศึกษาจำนวนมากในสมัยนั้น (ก็คงเหมือนเสมัยนี้ อิอิ) กัดๆ ดี…

George: “Look around you Grant.  Most of these students aspire to nothing more than a corporate job.  The desire to raise Coke-drinking, TV-watching children who, as soon as they can speak, chant TV jingles and smash things with hammers... I find them staring at me in a bovine stupor, as if I were lecturing in a foreign language.  Remind me again why we shouldn't all just be annihilated.”

เพื่อน (Grant) ก็บอกต่อว่าจอร์จว่าเรื่องใหญ่ขนาดนี้ทำไมไม่ให้ความสนใจบ้าง จอร์จตอบได้อย่างถูกใจว่า “If it's going to be a world with no time for sentiment, then it's not a world I want to live in.” ถ้าโลกนี้ไร้สีสัน (แห่งอารมณ์) ฉันก็คงไม่อยากอยู่



จอร์จมาถึงที่ทำงาน และนั่งรอในขณะที่จะต้องเข้าสอน เค้าเป็นคนเจ้าระเบียบและเนี๊ยบมาก ต้องรอให้ถึงเวลาจริงๆ จึงจะลุกขึ้นหิ้วกระเป๋าไปเข้าชั้นเรียน ชอบโทนสีและเส้นตั้งและรูปทรงที่ประกอบกันเป็นฉากนี้มากๆอีกเหมือนกัน (เพิ่มเติม 5/13/2013 - เหมือนโทนเรื่อง Mad Men)





After Many A Summer Dies A Swan...
ฉากต่อไปเป็นฉากในห้องเรียน  หนังสือที่จอร์จยกมาสอนก็เหมือนจะเป็นการเชื่อมโยงกับความรู้สึกของตัวเอกของเรา หนังสือชื่อ After Many A Summer Dies A Swan (1939) แต่งโดย Aldous Hexley ซึ่งเป็นเรื่องของมหาเศรษฐีคนหนึ่งซึ่งอยากกลัวความแก่และความตายมากจนหมกมุ่นอยู่กับการค้นหาทางเป็นอมตะ จะผิดกันก็ตรงที่จอร์จไม่คิดที่จะเป็นอมตะ แต่ต้องการจะจบชีวิตของตนลงในวันนี้

ในตอนนี้มีบทพูดที่เกี่ยวกับเรื่อง ความกลัว ที่น่าสนใจทีเดียว

Hirsch: “On page 79, Mr. Propter says that the stupidest text in the bible is 'They hate me without a cause'.  Does that mean the Nazi's were right to hate the Jews?  Is Huxley an anti-Semite?” (หมายเหตุ: ในทำนองเดียวกัน การที่คนเกลียดคนยิว ก็เป็นในทิศทางเดียวกับที่มีคนมากมายรังเกียจ กลุ่มคนรักร่วมเพศ หรือที่เรียกว่า Homo Phobia)

George: “No.  Mr. Huxley is not an anti-semite.  Of course, the Nazis were wrong to hate the Jews, but their hating the Jews was not without a cause.  It's just that the cause wasn't real.  The cause was imagined.  The cause was fear. 

Let's leave the Jews out of this for a moment.  Let's think of another minority --one that can go unnoticed if it needs to.  There are all sorts of minorities, blonds for example, people with freckles… But a minority is only thought of as one when it constitutes some kind of threat to the majority – a real threat or an imagined one.  And therein lies the fear.  And if that minority is somehow invisible, then the fear is much greater.  That fear is why the minority is persecuted.  And so you see, there always is a cause.  The cause is fear.  Minorities are just people.  People like us.”

“Fear, after all, is our real enemy.  Fear is taking over our world.  Fear is being used as a tool of manipulation in our society.  It's how politicians peddle policy.  It's how Madison Avenue sells us things we don't need.  Think about it.  The fear of being attacked.  The fear that there are communities lurking around every corner.  The fear that some little Caribbean country that doesn't believe in our way of life, poses a threat to us.  The fear that black culture may take over the world.  The fear of Elvis Presley's hips. Actually that one's may be a real fear.  The fear that our bad breath may ruin our friendships.  Fear of growing old, being alone.  The fear that we're useless, and no one cares what we have to say.”
 



ฉากต่อไปที่ชอบเป็นฉาก Charlie แต่งตัว 


 
Ford: "Julianne's character, Charlotte, is under construction, here, her hair teased up but not smoothed down.  She's having a midlife crisis as George is and she is clinging to all the things people have expected from her in the past.  She's been known to be a great beauty, she's played by the game of our culture and society.  She always has the latest house, the latest clothes, the latest cars and made a great effort to be beautiful and this is not working for her anymore but yet she's still clinging to it.  You can see her real self on one side where she's unmade up and the artifice that she's creating on the other side.  In fact you see both her art and artifice because her art is creating a creature that she feels everyone is going to love... 

ตัวละครของชาร์ลี (ชาร์ล้อต) ก็กำลังอยู่ในภาวะ "ซึมเศร้าในวัยต่อ พยายามทำทุกวิถีทางเพื่อสร้างภาพให้ตัวเองเป็นคนล้ำสมัย และทำตัวให้เป็นอย่างที่ตัวเองคิดสังคม"จะยอมรับ สังเกตจากเสื้อผ้า การแต่งตัว แต่งหน้า แต่งผม การแต่งบ้าน รถที่ใช้ เพลงที่ฟัง ฯลฯ

ฉากต่อไปที่ชอบ คือตอนนี้ เด็กหญิงที่จอร์จมักรำคาญ แต่วันนี้เธอดูงดงาม เต็มไปด้วยสีสัน ฉากจะเน้นที่เด็กน้อยใส่รองเท้าสีฟ้าใสเคาะรองเท้าสามครั้ง เหมือน โดโรธีใน Wizard of Oz เคาะรองเท้าทับทิมสามครั้ง สีก็บรรเจิด

 

พอซูซานเพื่อนบ้าน แม่ของเด็กเดินเข้ามา เธอก็สีจ้าเหมือนกัน เพราะวันนี้จอร์จจะได้เห็นเธอเป็นวันสุดท้าย






George's Flashback...
… On that day, George was photographing all day, so the scene is in black and white... because he's thinking in black and white, light and shadow.

(ชอบภาพนี้มากๆ เหมือนกัน จอร์จมาจอดรถตรงหน้าโปสเตอร์หนังเรื่อง Psycho ตาของ Janet Leigh)

ฉากที่จอร์จเจอคาร์โลสนี้คงเป็นฉากที่คนจำนวนมากว่าว่าหนังเรื่องนี้เหมือนโฆษณาน้ำหอมผู้ชาย แต่ไม่เห็นเป็นไร ชอบเพราะถ่ายได้สวยมาก นายแบบ Jon Kortajarena ที่แสดงเป็นคาร์โลส ก็หล่อดับจิต สไตล์ James Dean ... So who cares?, right? :) โปรดสังเกตสีที่จ้าขึ้นเรื่อยๆ ตอนที่จอร์จจ้องริมฝีปากงามปานเทพบุตรของคาร์โลส...




Carlos: “Sometimes awful things have their own kind of beauty.”
Ford: “I love that line because I really do believe that often most things in life have a kind of beauty if you can see them the right way...”

Carlos: “Lovers are like buses.  You just have to wait a while and another one comes along.” (ประมาณรถเมล์เที่ยวสุดท้าย อะไรทำนองนี้ :))




Ford: “You have to find some sort of humor when terrible things happen to you.”


Ford: "People rarely have real conversation in film anymore."


 
หน้าตาKenny จะสีแปร๊ดมาก เพราะจอร์จเริ่มประทับใจในการพูดคุยกับเค้า

George:  "One must always appreciate life's little gift."

That's the thing about life... just when you think that something's not going well something else happens

George: “If one is not enjoying the present, there isn't a great deal to suggest the future should be any better.”

Kenny: “I feel alone most of the time... We're born alone, we die alone. And while we're here, we're absolutely; completely sealed in our own bodies...We can only experience the world through our own slanted perception of it.  Who knows what you are really like? I just see what I think you're like.

George: “I'm exactly what I appear to be... if you look closely.  You know, the only thing that's made the whole thing worthwhile...has been those few times when I've been able to really... truly connect with another human being.”

Ford: “This is the most important point in the film – what's it really all about.  The most important things in life are the small things that we overlook and the connection with other people is the thing that really keeps us going.

Kenny: “Everyone keeps telling you that when you're older, that you'll have all this experience, like it's some great thing...

George: “in the words of our friend Mr. Huxley: ‘Experience is not what happens to a man.  It's what a man does with what happens to him.’”

Ford: 
At the end of the movie, George begins to have his recurring dream, that he's sinking, drowning.  But something's happened to George.  Throughout this day he's changed.  He's had a kind of epiphany.  He started to come to understand the meaning of life.  He's had a wonderful life and that the connections to other people are important things in life… and this time he doesn't sink.  He starts to push for surface and he has come up for air... and he takes breath.

ตอนท้ายของหนัง จอร์จฝันแบบเดียวกันอีกว่าเขาเวียนว่ายอยู่ใต้น้ำ แต่คราวนี้จอร์จเริ่มมีความหวังในชีวิต เริ่มค้นพบสัจธรรม เขาเริ่มว่ายขึ้นสู่ผิวน้ำเพื่อหายใจ สังเกตว่าสีที่ใช้จะเป็นสีอุ่นแดงๆ อมส้ม

 

George's Closing Monologue
 
“A few times in my life, I've had moments of absolute clarity. When for a few, brief seconds...the silence drowns out the noise and I can feel... rather than think.  And things seem so sharp.  And the world seems so fresh. A Single Man 1 – หนังดีที่คนรักหนังและคนรักการถ่ายภาพไม่ควรพลาด (ตอนที่ 1)

Just got a chance to watch this movie on DVD and absolutely love it.  Everything about it -- cinematography, the script, the acting, the set, the plot, the subtext -- are JUST engaging and classy.  There are tons of quotable lines throughout the movie and also from the excellent commentary by Producer/Director Tom Ford. There are two parts to this blog... nuff said.

เพิ่งเอาหนังเรื่องนี้มาดูเมื่อวานนี้ ดูจบประทับใจสุดๆ ยอดมากๆ จนต้องใส่ไว้ในทำเนียบหนังในดวงใจอีกเรื่องหนึ่งเลยทีเดียว ทุกอย่างเกี่ยวกับหนังไม่มีที่ติ ไม่ว่าจะเป็นบทภาพยนต์ซึ่งโดนใจมากจนต้องคัดเก็บไว้แทบทั้งเรื่อง การออกแบบฉากและเครื่องแต่งกาย การแสดงที่โดดเด่นของดาราทุกคน การถ่ายภาพและตัดต่อ รวมทั้งเพลงประกอบ ขอบอกว่าสุดยอดจริงๆ จนน่าจะไ้ด้รับการเสนอชื่อชิงรางวัลในทุกๆด้าน แต่ผ่านตากรรมการออสก้าร์ไปซะงั้น

หนังเรื่องนี้สร้างและกำกับโดย Tom Ford แฟชั่นดีไซเนอร์ชื่อดังที่ปฏิวัติแบรนด์ให้ Gucci, Yves Saint Laurant และมีผลงานด้านโฆษณาที่สะท้านสะเทือนวงการแฟชั่นมาแล้ว โดยมีเค้าโครงจากนวนิยายของ Christopher Isherwood

ดารานำ Colin Firth แสดงเป็นจอร์ช อาจารย์มหาวิทยาลัยเกย์วัยเริ่มกลางคน เรื่องนี้ คอร์ลินเล่นดีมากจนได้รับรางวัลดารานำชายยอดเยี่ยมที่เทศกาลหนังที่เวนิส และได้รับเสนอชื่อเข้าชิงดารานำชายยอดเยี่ยมที่ออสการ์ปีที่แล้ว

Julianne Moore ซึ่งบทบาทการแสดงของเธอเชื่อขนมกินได้เลย แสดงเป็นชาร์ลี (ชาร์ล้อต) เพื่อนสนิทและกิ๊กเก่าของจอร์ชที่ประสบปัญหาชีวิตในวัยต่อ (mid-life crisis) เหมือนกัน

Nicholas Hoult เล่นเป็น Kenny นักศึกษาหนุ่มวัยที่มีความสับสนในชีวิต เพราะรู้สึกว่าตัวเองไม่เหมือนใคร คุยกับคนอื่นไม่รู้เรื่อง เค้าเกิดความชื่นชมจอร์ชอย่างมาก ไม่แน่ใจว่าเป็นเกย์หรือเปล่า อาจจะแค่ปลื้มๆ อาจารย์ (พวกเราหลายๆ คนก็คงเคยมีประสบการณ์นี้ สมัยเรียนหนังสือ มีอาจารย์ที่เราชื่นชม เป็น role model ทำนองนี้) และรู้สึกว่าจอร์ชคงจะมีคำตอบให้กับในทุกๆเรื่องที่เค้าสงสัย  พ่อหนุ่มน้อยคนนี้ ตัวเองชอบมาตั้งแต่แสดงเรื่อง About A Boy ตอนนี้เป็นหนุ่มตัวสูงแล้ว หล่อเหลาเอาการ เล่นดีมากๆ เหมือนกัน

Matthew Goode หนุ่มอังกฤษหน้าหวานที่พูดสำเนียงอเมริกันได้อย่างคล่องแคล่วแนบเนียน แสดงเป็นจิม คู่รักของจอร์ชที่อยู่ด้วยกันมาถึง 16 ปี ก่อนที่จะประสบอุบัติเหตุรถยนต์เสียชีวิต ซึ่งการจากไปของเค้าเป็นจุดเริ่มเรื่องของหนังเรื่องนี้

เรื่องเริ่มขึ้นแปดเดือนหลังจากที่จิมเสียชีวิตไป จอร์ชก็ยังเจ็บปวดอย่างแสนสาหัสจากการสูญเสีย เค้ารู้สึกโดดเดี่ยว หวาดกลัว กลัวว่าตัวเองกำลังแก่ตัวลงและกลัวที่จะต้องอยู่คนเดียว เค้าเฝ้าแต่ฝันว่าตัวเองจมน้ำ ดำดิ่งในวังวนที่หาทางออกไม่ได้ และในวันนี้คือวันที่ 30 พฤศจิกายน ปี 1962 (2505) เค้าตั้งใจจะฆ่าตัวตาย หนังทั้งเรื่องจึงเริ่มดำเนินไปผ่านมุมมองของจอร์ชที่เริ่มจะเห็นทุกอย่างแตกต่างไปโดยสิ้นเชิง เมื่อรู้ว่าวันนี้จะเป็นวันสุดท้ายของชีวิต
แม้ว่าเรื่องนี้จะเป็นเรื่องความรักของผู้ชายสองคนแต่เนื้อหาใช้ได้กับคู่รักทุกๆคู่ และคนทุกคนที่ย่อมต้องผ่านมรสุมมาบ้างไม่มากก็น้อย ณ จุดใดจุดหนึ่งของชีวิต



เอาหนังตัวอย่างเวอร์ชั่นที่ฉายในอังกฤษมาให้ดูเปรียบเทียบกันด้วย ตัวเองชอบของอังกฤษมากกว่า

 

คงจะมีคนจำนวนมากที่ไม่อยากดูเรื่องนี้เพราะคิดว่าเป็นความรักของเกย์ แต่จริงๆ แล้วมันใช้ได้กับคู่ทุกๆคู่ จะหญิงชาย ชายชาย หรือหญิงหญิงก็ตาม  มีอีกตอนนึงที่ชอบมากๆ และคิดว่าดาราแสดงได้น่าทึ่งเหลือเกิน รู้สึกว่าเป็นห้วงแห่งการตกหลุมรักของคนสองคนที่โรแมนติกที่สุด ตอนที่ Jim พูดว่า "I think I'm taken" แล้วจ้องไปที่ตาของจอร์ช อุแม่เจ้า สุดยอด



สารคดีเบื้องหลังการทำหนังเรื่องนี้ก็ทำได้ดีมาก Tom Ford พูดดีสุดๆ โดนใจเลยอยากเก็บเอามาฝาก ขอคัดเอาเฉพาะที่ชอบและกินใจ


 
Tom Ford: “The film is a romance.  It’s also about isolation that we all feel.  And I think that most of us spend a good deal of our life trying to connect… try to connect with another person.”

Movie Clip:
George: “You know, the only thing that's made the whole thing worthwhile...has been those few times when I've been able to really... truly connect with another human being.”
Kenny: “I had a hunch about you, Sir.”
George: “You did?”
Kenny: “Yes, Sir.  I had a hunch you might be a real romantic.”

Colin Firth: “This is a man who intends to end his life today.  And so it gives incredible vibrancy and poignancy to that day.  Rather than it being gloomy and tragic because it's all gonna come to an end, the focus is on that vibrancy.”

Tom Ford:  “The main message of the film is really to live in the present...to live every day as though it were your last day.”

Colin Firth:  He has given himself a last look, and a wonderfully intense last look.

Tom Ford: “Sometimes, the most amazing things in life are the small little things... something someone said to you, the smell of someone's neck --little things in life --because the small things in our life are really the big things in our life.  And I think it's very important to remember that.”

Matthew Goode (Jim):  What I loved about it is there were just moments of life. Just like-- just sitting on a sofa, having a chat.

Jim:  Yeah, I'm not changing it.  It's your turn. Besides, you never like what I put on anyway.
George: I'll give you $5 if you change it.  I'm too old to get up.

George: Well, it wouldn't be okay with me...
Jim: Good answer.

Matthew:  It's something just very real. And that's what got me.

GEORGE:
Tom:  All three of our principal characters are going through a change of life. George is going from his middle age to his older years and can't see his future.  He can't really figure out what the next phase of his life is going to be.  George decided to kill himself and because of this, he goes through this day in an entirely different way.  (Matthew) When he decides to kill himself, he starts to live for the first time in years.  When George looks at things, he's looking at them as though it's the last time he's going to see them and we understand this feeling of beauty that he feels.

CHARLEY:

Charley's character is going through this mid-life crisis, circa 1962.  A woman who's done everything that our culture tells her she should do.  She's built her life around her beauty, around being the perfect wife, the perfect mother, perfect hostess, yet, she finds herself absolutely alone.  Her husband left her, her child has grown up.  She's still trying to play the game that she had been playing for so long and it doesn't work anymore.  She's no longer a great, young beauty and so her feeling is “Then, what am I?” … She's stuck in a box.

KENNY

Kenny admires George.  He wonders about George.  He's curious about George and thinks that maybe George holds some of the answers for him.  He's drawn to George. He is attracted to George in that sense that he's intriguing, and he's excited by him.  He likes the way he thinks and his view on things, so that is the main attraction.  Kenny is kind of teaching George to enjoy the now and just notice the little things which, kind of, people go through in life and you don't stop and smell the flowers.


Tom Ford:  “Fashion is very fleeting.  Film lasts forever and I think that a film should challenge you.  I think the film should make you think.  And if I can get the audience to leave the theater and think, “Wow, I need to pay more attention to my day, because this is all I get.”, then I think the film will have meant something.”

เป็นหนังฟอร์มไม่ค่อยใหญ่ที่ออกมาเมื่อปีที่แล้ว ใกล้ๆ กับหนังเรื่อง Up in the Air ที่ George Clooney แสดง ก็เลยไม่ค่อยดังมาก แต่ดูแล้วหัวเราะดังมากๆๆๆ

ดาราทุกคนแสดงได้ตลกอย่างไม่น่าเชื่อ ไม่ว่าจะเป็น George Clooney, Ewan McGregor (Obi-wan Kenobi จาก Star Wars ภาคสาม Revenge of the Sith), Jeff Bridges (The Fabulous Baker Boys, Crazy Heart), และ Kevin Spacey (The Usual Suspects, Se7en, American Beauty) ที่รับบทดาวร้ายได้อย่างน่าหมั่นไส้ ตามเคย

แม็คเกรเกอร์แสดงเป็น Bob Wilton นักข่าวที่ผ่านมรสุมชีวิตมาหมาดๆ จากการหย่าร้างและต้องการค้นหาตัวเอง เลยประชดชีิวิตหน่อยๆ ด้วยการมุ่งหน้าสู่อิรัก และพบว่าชีวิตตัวเองผกผันไปโดยสิ้นเชิงเมื่อโชคชะตาเล่นตลกให้เค้ามาพบกับ Lyn Skip Cassidy แสดงโดย George Clooney อดีตทหารหน่วยราชการลับของสหรัฐฯ ซึ่งกำลังจะไปปฏิบัติภาระกิจลับสุดยอดพอดี

เจฟ บริดเจส แสดงเป็น บิล แจงโก้ นายทหารที่รอดตายจากเวียตนามแล้วเกิดปิ๊งคิดแนวทางการปฏิรูปปฏิบัติการลับ (Special Op) สร้างกองกำลังฝึกทหารให้เป็นอาวุธที่ใช้โทรจิต (psych weapons) หลังจากไปแสวงหาความจริงในโลกใหม่ที่มีดอกไม้ในรูหูที่แคลิฟอร์เนียอยู่หลายปี

เรื่องราวต่างๆ จากจุดนี้ เกิดการโอละพ่ออย่างน่าขำและน่าคิด

สำหรับตัวเองชอบเนื้อเรื่องที่เป็นการเสียดสีอเมริกาและ Military-Industrial Complex (แปลเป็นไทยว่าไงหว่า -- คำนี้เป็นคำที่ประธานาธิบดีไอเซ็นฮาว เคยทำนายไว้หลังสงครามโลกครั้งที่สองว่า อเมริกา ในภายภาคหน้าอาจจะตกอยู่ในสภาพเป็นประเทศที่ตกอยู่ใต้แนวทางที่ดำเนินโดยทหารและผู้นำทางอุตสาหกรรม – ฟังดูคุ้นๆ ไงไม่รู้) แล้วก็เนื้อหาที่เกี่ยวกับการค้นหาจุดยืนของตัวเอง คนทำหนังแฝงแง่คิดไว้ในความตลกได้อย่างแนบเนียน

เป็นหนังที่ดูจากชื่อเรื่องจะงง แต่พอดูแล้วสนุกมากๆ อีกเรื่องหนึ่ง ที่อยากชวนให้ดู

วันนี้นั่งอ่านหนังสือรวบรวมบทกวีของ Stéphane Mallarmé เจอกลอนบทที่ชื่อว่า “L’Après-Midi d’un Faune” (The Afternoon of a Faun) แล้วคิดว่าเหมาะกับภาพนี้มากๆ

หมายเหตุ: “Faun” คือภูติไม้หูแหลมๆ อยู่ในเทพนิยาย “Fawn”เจ้าลูกกวางน้อยนี่ก็หูแหลมเหมือนกัน

Stéphane Mallarmé - Toute L’Âme Résumée

เมื่อไม่นานมานี้ ได้ไปดูนิทรรศการภาพ The Birth of Impressionismที่ De Young Museum แล้วประทับใจคำบรรยายภาพเหมือนของ Stéphane Mallarmé ที่ Manet วาดเหลือเกิน นัยว่า Mallarmé ชอบภาพที่ Manet วาดให้มากจนเขียนกลอนบทนี้ขึ้นมา

กลอนของ Mallarmé สละสลวยเพราะพริ้งเหมือนกับดนตรี ส่วนความหมายนั้น ตัวเองบอกไม่ถูกว่าทำำไมอ่านแล้วนึกถึงปรัชญาพุทธศาสนา ถึงความไม่เที่ยงแท้ของชีวิต ของสรรพสิ่ง โดยเฉพาะประโยคสุดท้ายที่คัดมาทำให้นึกถึงคำที่ว่า “ที่ใดมีรัก ที่นั่นมีทุกข์”

This is Thai Pantene T.V.commercial my friend emailed me a while ago.  I was so touched by it. The message is worth repeating...

- "Why am I different from others?"
- "Why do you have to be like others?"

ทุกคนคงได้ดูกันแล้วมั้งคะ แต่ข้อคิดนี้น่าเก็บไว้เตือนใจเสมอๆ

- จงภูมิใจในทุกสิ่งที่คุณเป็น แม้คุณจะไม่เหมือนคนอื่นก็ตาม
- บทเพลงและสุนทรียมีอยู่ทั่วไป เพียงหลับตาจินตนาการ ก็สามารถสัมผัสได้ (อันนี้ขอประยุกต์นิดนึง)
